Gemina by Amy Kaufmann & Jay Kristoff

Gemina is the sequel to the adventurous The Illuminae Files Triology.

No spoilers for book one here!

If you don‘t know what this series is about:

The Illuminae Files is a ya science-fiction series that takes place in the year 2575. The planet Kerenza was attacked by the rival BeiTech. Now the inhabitants are trying to escape through fleet ships. The main ones and where the story in book one takes place, are the Alexander, Hypatia and Copernicus. We get to follow Kady and Ezra and how they‘re trying to flee, to the six month away jump station Heimdall, from the still chasing BeiTech company who wants to extinguish every Kerenza witness.

This time we are on the space station Heimdall and we get to know a whole new set of characters. Hannah is the daughter of the captain and Nik is from a criminal family.

Every day life seems boring to Hannah, until Heimdall is getting assaulted by the BeiTech company and the space ship is taken under their control. Hannah and Nik are forced to work together to save the ship or the whole universe will cease to exist as they know it.

Again, the book takes us into a gripping adventure. It reads itself like a sci-fi action movie. The story feels serious and enthralling, but gets a touch of comic relief through the bantering of the characters. Especially the chats between Nik, his cousin + hacking expert Ella and Hannah are hilarious. I loved when Ella constantly changed Nik‘s nickname in one chat and he raged. The names were too funny! The commentator of the surveillance footage camera is hilarious too and let‘s not forget the lollipop song that drove everybody crazy.

Same as in the first book, the story-telling is so unique! It‘s only written in form of illegal documents like e-mails, chats, surveillance camera footage summaries, medical files, interviews etc. The format is on point for this story and makes for a very different reading experience which is awesome. At first it might take a few pages to get familiar with it and to orientate yourself, but afterwards you‘re turning the pages quickly.

I loved the whole dynamic between Ella and Nik. I liked Hannah and Nik too, but I didn‘t feel is as much as between Kady and Ezra. I liked Kady a bit more than Hannah, because she has a much stronger personality and leadership.

I found the story structure too similar to Illuminae. It followed basically the same lead just with different characters.

But the twists!

I like how Amie and Jay are messing with our feels. I‘m very excited for the conclusion and hope that we are getting some more information about what BeiTech actually wants. Because I don‘t think we got many details about that.

I liked Illuminae a bit more than Gemina, but I gave it full 5 stars nonetheless.

The Triology deserves all the hype! If you like YA and sci-fi you should definitely check it out.

Star Rating: 5/5

Favourite Character: Kady

Favorite quote: “Her eyes shining with the light of it.

Beneath, between, beyond.

Along the endless circle.

Down the ceaseless spiral.

And waiting for her on the other side?

Just like he promised.

“A whole sky of different stars.”
